As the leaves change and the temperatures begin to drop, it is important to think about preparing your home for the changing season. Especially here in the Midwest, we never know exactly when the weather will shift.

Home safety should always be a top priority - especially with the changing seasons! And a little bit of attention now is sure to save in costly repairs down the road. Here are some helpful tips to get your home ready for the fall and upcoming winter seasons.

Interior Tips

According to the US Department of Energy, heat loss through windows is responsible for 25-30% of energy use. Check for drafts around doors and windows. If you can feel air coming in, it might mean it is time to replace some seals, weather stripping, or caulking.  Additionally, check and replace the filters on AC and heating units to ensure they are clear of debris and effectively heating your home. It is also a good idea to check and replace batteries in your home safety devices—smoke detectors and carbon monoxide meters—to ensure they are working properly and will help keep you and your loved ones safe. And while you’re at it, go ahead and replace the batteries in your remotes too!

Exterior Tips

The exterior of your home is equally important to prepare for cooler weather as the inside! Be sure to at least visually inspect your roof for any shingles that may be loose or damaged. Consider hiring a service to clean the gutters to remove any leaves, sticks, or nests and check for leaks.  With that, be sure that gutters and downspouts are free of blockages and aimed away from foundations, walkways, and driveways. Also, inspect trees for any damaged or hanging limbs that may fall with big gusts of wind or land on power lines.

Be sure to prepare your home for the changing seasons the best you can to ensure the safety of both you and your home. The weather here in the Midwest changes quickly and can be unpredictable, so act early and avoid any last-minute fixes with these helpful tips.
